Where'd you go? I want to know...
If you can name that song lyric above, you get some invisible internet points from me! What can I say, I had a ska phase like every 90s kid. Thanks again to Dave from GrainEdit for another fun editorial where I got to stretch the ol' illustration muscles. And I got some lettering in there, so bonus! For this article, it's all about a shortage for CFO's in Silicon Valley so my initial digital roughs had the job of showing alternate ways to indicate the low population.
So 1st concept was a store shelf with a CFOs section being empty and "out of stock", 2nd was a endangered species list that listed CFOs as being a critical low population in the habitat of Silicon Valley, and the 3rd was suggested by the AD, to show everyone on a desperate search.
They chose the 3rd option and after a small round of tweaks, I got to run with it! I really played with color on this one, quite proud of myself for pushing the illustration style (for me!) and the color palette. And I used a more subtle shading brush from the amazing pack from Kyle at kylebrush.com to build up lighting and shadow on those buildings. Since this concept was a little more serious, as opposed to the previous article I did that had a taste of mean girls (see that Project Post here), I went with a style that could hold up to so many layers with the signal post in front, then people and clustered office buildings receding.
